Socially Responsible Investing

FFA specializes in Socially Responsible Investing (SRI), also known as socially-conscious or ethical investing, which is an investment strategy seeking to maximize both financial return and social good.

In general, socially responsible investors favor corporate practices that promote environmental stewardship, consumer protection, human rights, and diversity. Some (but not all) avoid businesses involved in alcohol, tobacco, gambling, weapons, the military, and/or abortion. The areas of concern recognized by the SRI industry can be summarized as environment, social justice, and corporate governance (ESG).

SRI includes numerous strategies including:

Screening – including or excluding securities and/or funds based on social and environmental criteria.  We look to invest in companies and institutions whose products, services and practices contribute to a more socially just and sustainable society.

Divert investments away from institutions or businesses which pollute or cause harm to the environment, conduct business in oppressive regimens, use unfair labor practices, produce nuclear weapons or employ other practices damaging to the quality or life.

THIS DOES NOT MEAN SACRIFICING FINANCIAL GAINS.  Investors can do as well with social investments as they can with conventional investments.

We have a wide variety of clients with a range of objectives, values and risk tolerances.  We work with the client, in a non-judgemental way, to make sure their portfolio is suited for them.

Shareholder Advocacy – make a small investment in irresponsible companies in order to influence the direction of business.

Charitable Giving - we will help you to select ways of giving that will provide tax advantages and can provide a income.

Community Investments – includes programs in community-based financial institutions such as development banks, loan funds and community credit unions to support community development in the United States and developing countries.

Go with the people. Live with them. Learn from them. Love them. Start with what they know. Build with what they have. But of the best leaders, when the job is done, the task accomplished, the people will all say, we have done this ourselves.”
